They don't call it "Needles" arbitrarily. Notice the cantilevered plates of rock here and there.

The three mushrooms on the left reminded me somehow of the Star Wars movies (the original three, not the crappy prequels).

Precarious Rock

A chunk of the white rock, nearly undercut by erosion. It was flanked by two razor-thin slot canyons, with lute-shaped cross sections where the water filtering through the narrow cracks in the white rock layer had eroded tubes in the softer red sandstone beneath.

The bowler-hat needle, at the end of the enormous fan near the midpoint of the hike. Unfortunately, the fan itself was too big to get a good picture of.

A rooster-tail ridge of striped rocks, back along the way we came, with another dissected valley in the foreground.
Dead Tree and Swirls
|
|
The obligatory dead tree shot, with a curiously swirly rock outcrop. Swirled formations like this were all over the park, and appeared to be the result of a non-uniform cross-layer erosion more than any actual swirling in the structure of the rock.

The Alien City
The Alien Temple

For some reason, this area of the park had the eerie feel of an ancient city on an alien planet, long ago abandoned to the ravages of time and neglect.

This deep crevice had not only the same layering on both sides but very similar discoloration streaks. It looked like it was sliced open.

The scenery for lunch (a Clif bar and some trail mix...the food was somewhat less inspiring than the surroundings).
