On the 2010 trip we never got the chance to cross over one of these sporty-looking bridges. After a few times it's only mildly unnerving.

Yes, the woman on the left is the same one in the earlier picture. I kept running into a group of ladies wearing the same-colored jackets everywhere I went, including the bus in and the bus out.

Thorsmork could use a better map, frankly.
Amusingly, while showing me this map at the counter at Volcano Huts and describing the route I should take around the point and back to Valahnjúkur, the desk clerk mentioned in passing that the route to Rjupnafjell is definitely not safe to do solo. (She didn't know I had done it the day before. It was safer than any 14er I've hiked, but her comment still made me feel pretty manly.)

Plan was to hike upriver as far as I could safely go. Like the day before, that turned out to be not very far - thanks to the loop of river on the left. This was maybe a half mile upriver from where I'd reached the bank coming down from Rjupnafjell.
