Different ...

Different ...
This was Spring along the sidewalk in the Garden of Surprises - 2016 -

It has changed - not just the seasons, but the ground under the bricks -
Gave way to a hopefully small hole -
Sidewalk (2 sections - 1 that meets the bricks - and one that joins it - )
Are no more -
Ever heard a concrete saw ?
Then a sledge hammer ?
Thomas, our Neighborhood Feline, was nowhere to be seen -
Not one bird was seen or heard from during the demolition -

1 note on Right - starting with when the damaged was seen -
Through to today when 2 sections of the sidewalk turned into chunks of concrete -
Those chunks are in the hole - temporarily, so nobody walks into it -

Oh, the joys of home ownership !

Update : 1 note added to left side -- the repairs were more extensive than originally thought. The sinkhole was 10 feet wide x 4 feet deep.
It has been fixed !
Our sloping yard will drain properly ..
With the drain (small green rectangle in straw ) which diverts water into underground pipes ..
Then on to the City Storm Drain..

Helena Ferreira, Andy Rodker, Danielle, and 3 other people have particularly liked this photo

Terrific shot and PIPs! Too bad things appear to be falling apart.

It is being fixed ... lived for over 20yrs in Florida ( the land of sinkholes ) -- never had one -- but---- this isn't a sinkhole, per se ... maybe a first cousin?
William, it shall be fun next year when the things I plant from this section are moved and what a guessing game it shall be!

Hard to tell from the beautiful picture. I hope the damage was minimal and easily repaired.

I just leave things like that and call it "building character".

Dick, never had problems like this down there .. go figure !
It would be hard to leave a hole in the ground for 'character building' -- can just see someone coming through the yard to deliver a package .. and wham ... into a hole ! Not good ..

Hi Peggy ...
... internet photosharing sites all seem to be caught in cyber-sinkhole ...
... I also will hang with Ipernity until the end; if only they could conceive of a cheap way to just limp along maintaining the status quo (or a little less, even) and no wish-list/enhancements ...

Hello Peggy,
Where I lived in Cornwall was the town of St Day, known locally as 'Sinking City'. There were so many unrecorded mine shafts from the past 700 years and all over the place that they would open up at any time and whole gardens would disappear! Fortunately no homes have been lost in this way ...YET!!
My parents still live there and we got a full structural survey done. There is a horizontal mine shaft below their house but it is 50 feet down and there is solid granite between so is quite safe.
But your interesting shot, PiPs and info struck a chord with me!
Best wishes for The New Year and for ipernity's future (I did ask Santa very very nicely if we could keep it!).

Andy,
In Florida, along fault lines, it wasn't unusual for a sinkhole to open .. and yes, if near a home - it was usually done for.
Do remember one year that a hole opened in the road going around a large lake. Everybody in town brought things to put in it and fill that hole -- we didn't want the lake to drain.
Best wishes to you for the New Year also and for good news about Ipernity ( I also bent Santa's ear a little. )

What a sink hole. I didn't know that they happened in this area. I'm glad it has been fixed (hopefully for good). Best wishes for the New Year!

After I discovered it, I found that they do happen in NC, but not often where we are. All that could be figured was that over many, many years the sloping yard drainage (as the previous owners had set it up) caused the clay to sink .. even though the hole looks like Florida sand.
The way it has been fixed .. don't anticipate any problems. They did a great job.
Best wishes to you also for the New Year, R ....

Yes, I have heard both of those instruments of Satanic torture, Peggy! Of the two, the concrete saw is more hellish, I think.

Interesting photos of your own, private sinkhole!
