Abbey Ruins

Abbey Ruins
Kilwinning Abbey, Established circa 1162 - 1168, Disestablished 1592
And the Kilwinning parish church through the arch

Kilwinning Abbey was founded in the late 1100s. It has close ties to Kelso Abbey, one of Scotland’s great borders abbeys, which provided it with colonising monks.

The monks of Kilwinning had a peaceful existence in their 400-year stay here. The abbey was ‘cast down’ following the Protestant Reformation of 1560, though its magnificent south transept still stands nearly to its full height today.

Large for detail Please, HWW and a good Wednesday to all

I am intrigued by the honey colour of the stonework to the left of the arch. Is it the light? Is it some constituent part of the stone? Is it lichen or something similar? Whatever, it is fascinating to this Owl of little brain. HWW, Roger, and thank you for such a pleasing picture.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Old Owl club
Thank you, Old Owl, The extensive abbey ruins are in the middle of a busy town and my best guess re the colour is some form of reaction between the sandstone and traffic or other pollution as this yellow stone appears in places all over the ruins,

Phil Sutters club has replied to Roger (Grisly) club
Given the age, the difference in style and colouring between the two sides of the arch, should not be surprising I suppose. Wear and tear and the protestant vandalism of the abbeys and monasteries have left these picturesque relics all over the country. Each one has its own story. Our nearest ruin is St. Pancras Priory in Lewes. I was surprised how much my grandchildren absorbed from the information boards around the site.
HWW Roger

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Phil Sutters club
Thank you for the interesting reply Phil, this Abbey is out on a limb and well away from the majority of other establishments, but I did find this snippet of information,

Great composition Roger...............especially the framing of the parish church through the archway. I also like colours of the stonework and the way the stones have weathered and changed over the years.

Beautifully sharp and detailed throughout too and a nice sky. Top notch work!
