Sale!

Sale!
Another week, another sale in Bridgwater's Fore Street, The statue is of Robert Blake who was born in Bridgwater in August 1598, the eldest son of Humphrey and Sarah Blake. His home is now the Blake Museum. Link to Admiral Blake's History, bridgwater-tc.gov.uk/history/17th-century/admiral-blake

Bridgwater is at the edge of the Somerset Levels, in level and well-wooded country. The town lies along both sides of the River Parrett; it has been a major inland port and trading centre since the industrial revolution.Wikipedia

HBM and a good week ahead, Large view is possibly best

Maria Lovasz, Gabi Lombardo, Erhard Bernstein, José Manuel Polo and 25 other people have particularly liked this photo

Well captured Roger. I can remember when Admiral Blake was sitauted up where the bench is now. Not a lot of people in the town nowadays, despite the sales, as most shop in the retail park

Thank you, It looked much more impressive on the Cornhill, the move was against the wishes of the town and pushed through at taxpayer's expense by the district council thankfully it will cease to exist come April

An excellent picture of Bridgwater Roger. The charity shop is in a nice building. Was it once a Bank or Building Society? You have positioned the bench very well....nice framing. Thank you also for the information.

HBM and a good new week.

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne
Thank you, Rosa, the building you refer too was a Leeds Permanent Building Society Branch and the sports Direct shop was once M&S.

Places are always having Sales and this can be seen by the ever rising prices! I only remember the traffic jams in this town. A nice shot though. Well done.

HBM, enjoy the week. Herb

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Herb Riddle club
Many thanks Herb, small town centres are dying as shops move to retail parks, and the traffic jams still occur but generally only when the M5 closes, but that has become a regular occurrence.

This is quite a nice looking town centre Roger...........it's obvious it's been pretty well looked after and is clean and tidy, which is more than I can say for my town Havant :-(

The link you provided was very interesting, I've obviously heard about Blake's naval career, but little of his involvement in politics and the civil war.

I did however note from the link that corruption involving MPs and big business is not something new..!!

Many thanks Keith, some years back it was in a sorry state, then the town center, the parks, cemeteries etc were taken over by the town council and things haven't looked back, the district council was finally disappears at the end of March was never a success and was never popular in the town anyway.
