This just about sums up the way 'photography' has gone, John. The only thing missing is a 'selfie stick' so they could all be in shot. :-)

I'd be awfully tempted to ask her to take a couple of steps backwards so I could her her all in :-))

I was afraid she was going to fall in myself, Keith. But she had far better balance than I do.

You're going to have to explain sometime how being a lone tourist does not involve planning. I mean, you still have to "plan" at least some parameters for a trip, no? Unless you take the car and just drive into the unknown (come to think of it, I wrote a novella about that. But that's another story ...)

At my age, Sarah, I find I have no need to plan or even think. My unconscious does everything for me. I have booked flights on the spur of the moment after the thought that a trip would be nice popped into my head. I admit that I often make thorough plans for a trip, but I always abandon them when I get where I'm going. Of course I have to be at airports and railway stations on time, but that happens automatically without me really having to think about it.

This approach may have been fostered by years of riding public transit in Toronto. Until the 1990s transit here was very good, but since then it's deteriorated. You go to a bus stop or car stop or enter a subway station not knowing what surprise the TTC will have arranged for you today. Planning goes for nought.

You might be interested in Parlons de Moi by Gilles Archambault, which involves the protagonist driving in a circle around Quebec. I believe it is this book from which I lifted the expression "He'd had the good sense to be born after his father," which I have used profitably ever since.

Iam a similar bird, plans often take a lot of energy and many times things dont go as planned so its much easier just go,even when you get lost there is always something interesting on the way..so you get rewarded.
Also dont have smartphone so when i really want right direction i just call a friend and iam on the right way in 5 minutes, who needs a smartphone if you have a good friend. ;)

Good points, Marko. Wandering also helps you get away from the "official" tourist city. A few years ago I took the wrong turn heading to Chiswick Park in London and ended up having lunch in an old-style cafe/caff in a pleasant little square. The people there were actually regulars, and there was no Starbucks, Costa, Caffè Nero, or McDonald's in sight
