Strong pattern much enlivened by a vacant space. Mundane, yet elevated, as Warhol taught us. Also it is interesting to see how Canadian stores present butter and how creameries wrap and label it. UK butter comes oblong, not square. I guess we get greater surface area to drag a knife across. More study required.

Thanks, TLC. These are actually oblong, but have been stacked on end. In the regular butter case they'd be stacked with the long side out:

These were just dumped in a gondola in the case they came in. A woman told me they were a great bargain, which was probably her polite Canadian way of teliing me to get out of the #!@#$%^&! way.

Canadians are famed for their good manners. There has been a calamitous descent to ill manners in Britain. If only the Canadian climate were more hospitable ...
In the UK the butter tends to be packed in a shape which has an oblong in all the planes. Nothing wrong with squares of course. Some of my best friends are squares.

I always find the English quite mannerly, although I do spend a lot of my time there in East Anglia, where I suspect people are more relaxed and less interested in making themselves feel better by antagonizing others.

Of the other Britons I cannot speak.

Manners in Canada are often passive-aggressive, as wehn people hold a door for you when you're twenty feet away, so you have to run to show your gratitude.

In Britain, if you hold a door open for someone behind you, as like as not they will pass through without a glance or a word of thanks. There is more violent crime in Britain than hitherto.

It does smack of Warhol, now that you mention it. I suspect that the texture would have thrown me off. But you're quite right.

I think this photograph eclipses Warhol's Brillo boxes. I believe you were justified in causing a brief but necessary hindrance in the name of art. Just as Warhol persisted with a concept, you should be patrolling supermarket aisles with your camera in search of more discordant patterns.

Sean Scully the painter and sculptor wrote about the early influence of menial jobs in his work. “It’s about stacking, putting things in order”. In a cardboard box factory he loaded bales of flat corrugated cardboard boxes into a van. “They were really beautiful, the lines made by the boxes.”
I guess there’s something similar here, in that the photograph gives us that kind of visually satisfying feeling.
