Der Basaltfächer auf dem Hirtstein wurde Ende des 19. Jhd. durch einen Steinbruch freigelegt. Der Gedanke der Schutzwürdigkeit ist damals schon in den Vordergrund gerückt. Beim damaligen Besitzer konnte ein rücksichtsvoller Abbau des Gesteins erwirkt werden.
