Here the road ends (at high tide)

The "Passage du Gois" is a 4,2 km passage in the sea, connecting the continent to the Noirmoutier Island. It is used since the 18th century and was the only driveway until 1971, date of the construction of a bridge. Today frequented by local oyster farmers, many fishermen on foot and tourists, the Gois is an unusual place to see. Beacons-shelters mark the passage of this submersible way, thus allowing the imprudent ones surprised by the rising tide to hoist themself up and to wait for the withdrawal of the tide (see PiP's).

Danke Karsten.

Hi Christa

I really like this collection, although I suppose there are people stupid enough to drive into the sea!!

Best Wishes, and a good weekend

Thanks Peter, and you're right: inspite of the big warning boards in several languages and the caution signs as well, there are always people taking the risk to cross at the last minute!!! And very often they find themselves blocked by the water. The only thing then to do is to climb on these "help-towers" and wait, that the tide goes down - but the car is defenitely ruined!!

Thanks Eric, yes it truly is, and it's not very often that you find a road that ends every six hours in the ocean!!

Truly, an amazing and unique place. How much is unusual in the world! And it's so wonderful - to visit and see such places with your own eyes! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Serge, this place is truly amazing, you must be careful when you are in your car and suddenly see the road stop because invaded by the ocean...But there are enough warning signs before!
