Decay in the Winter Sunlight

The old pier - Birnbeck Island, Weston Super Mare.with Flat Holm island and lighthouse in the background, beyond which is the coast of South Wales.
The old RNLI lifeboat station pictured here has closed now. When the pier began to deteriorate a walkway was built beside it to enable the lifeboat crews to access the station. However this too became unsafe and a new temporary base has been found on the promenade.

I do wish that *someone* would restore Birnbeck Pier and Island. It used to be really pretty to see.

Thank you very much. Really appreciated. Yes it really is sad to see it in this state. So many times in the past we have heard that it will be restored but it never seems to come to anything. I guess the longer it is left the more it would cost even if it is still possible to repair it. I remember the steamers setting off from here when I was a child and it all seemed quite magical then.

Thank you very much Gudrun. I would love to see it restored to its former glory but sadly it would probably prove too costly now and with a modern pier just around the corner I am not sure if there is enough interest. It is very sad. It holds a lot of memories for people of my generation. Happy New Year

Terrific shot with fabulous light, shame the place has been allowed to decay like this, I well remember paddle steam ships sailing from here,

I like the photograph, and I appreciated the history. Few people add a commentary, and it can be so valuable, no matter how good the picture. As only an occasional visitor to Weston super Mare, I was not aware of Birnbeck island. I clearly need to get out more - though not during the Covid pandemic. A future trip, I hope.

I believe there was more talk of trying to do something to this site but I guess Covid19 has probably stopped that for the time being.
