I think it's incredible that any have survived at all!
Many were pulled down because deemed barbarous (similar reasoning used by the Taliban and Islamic State today). Many others were removed for use in road construction and for other building work, and many more were simply shunted to the side of fields to be used in walls and to free up the farmland for sowing and ploughing crops.
