Okay, just a little experiment here. Yesterday I uploaded an image of this old petrol pump, which was actually produced from combining 3 bracketed RAW files and processed in Photomatix.

The light on the day I took the photos wasn't that great, but I still fancied trying the HDR route albeit with a gentle touch. Not only was I happy, but I got some favourable comments from you guys out there which was nice.

However, I got to wondering how the image might have turned out had I taken a different route - no pun intended. So this version is based on just a single JPEG file and processed in PaintShop Pro in much the same way as I'd process any other photo I took prior to buying Photomatix.

Like I say, just a little experiment, but it'll be interesting to see how people think the two images compare. So, if you've got a few minutes to spare hit z to view large and toggle back and forth between the two ... and then tell me which you prefer, that's assuming you think there's much to give or take between the two?

Diese Version gefällt mir besser: Bei der ersten Version ist der Kontrast übertrieben und zu stark geschärft.
This version I like better: The contrast in the first version is exaggerated and it is sharpened too much .

Many thanks for taking time to participate in my little experiment and for your comments.

It's probably not that scientific a test as the conditions weren't ideal for HDR so I still think it has much offer as I hope some of my other images have shown. However, in this instance although I thought I was happy with the HDR one I myself am now leaning towards this one!

This is better. Besides I still see no point using bracketing and HD7 if there really are no huge light difference.

I had a feeling you might say that Sami! ;)

I just thought it would be interesting even when the light variance wasn't that significant to try working with bracketed images especially as it's all still rather new to me. However, I'm inclined to agree with you this time and say that on this occasion at least the HDR route didn't bring much if anything to the party! :)

Yes, one can also use copies of one JPEG on multiple layers, use different layer modes, and do incredible things that way as well.

Well, I have to say I like the this one best. Brighter, even clearer despite the slight blur. Having said this, I have no idea what you or anyone else is talking about - lol!

Thanks for taking time to check these out and give an opinion Diane. As for Photomatix you can download a free trial of it if you fancy finding out more about what it has to offer:

I believe the trial is open-ended, but it will add several watermarks onto any images you create with it so I quickly upgraded once I realised how much I might want to use it in the future and that gets rid of the watermarks! :)
