"EASTER SUNDAY"

Underwater gold;
all flesh is glass.
Some hero saves us
from ourselves
by some alchemy
of ravagement.
Through closed eyes,
fast and vigil and
burn and rust to this.
Round the Church,
beneath lashing trees
and tottering daffodils,
a growing churchyard.
Those buried here,
in companionable rows,
seem so smug, really,
they're never going to want to get up.
///
DOMINGO DE PÁSCOA
Submersa áurea;
toda a carne é vítrea.
Um herói salvou-nos
de nós mesmos
por alguma alquimia
de desolação.
De olhos fechados,
jejum e vigília e
brilho e bolor para isto.
À volta da igreja,
sob sólidas árvores
e narcisos a balançar,
um adro a crescer.
Os que aqui estão enterrados,
em fiadas sociáveis,
parecem tão confortáveis que, realmente,
nunca mais vão querer ressuscitar.
