1725 Xanthorhoe ferrugata (Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet)

Geometridae, Larentiinae - Wingspan: 24-26mm.
Not too common in the UK, and now considered an endangered species, it is nevertheless fairly well established in Cornwall. Mostly with a prominent almost black bar across the wing, in some specimens the colour is a bit reddish in tint, so can be confused with the Red Twin-spot Carpet (Xanthorhoe spadicearia), but all can be clearly identified by the small notch in the inner edge of the cross-wing bar near the fore-wing leading edge. Like a few others of this sub-family, it can be difficult to identify at first as they usually rest, after being disturbed, with their wings together and upright like butterflies.
This species has an extended flight season from April to October, made from two generations. Peaks occur in May and August.
