Der Vierfleck (Libellula quadrimaculata) zählt zu den Großlibellen und erreicht eine Körperlänge von 4 bis 4,5 Zentimetern bei Flügelspannweiten zwischen 7 und 8,5 Zentimetern. Jeder der vier Flügel hat einen auffälligen dunklen Fleck im Bereich der markanten Querader (Nodus), wonach die Art sowohl ihren wissenschaftlichen als auch ihren Trivialnamen erhielt. Bekannt ist diese Libelle auch für ihre Massenwanderungen in Schwärmen von beeindruckenden Ausmaßen. Der Gesamtbestand gilt als nicht bedroht.
