This phenomenon is spectacular Gurdun, as are your pictures! The northern lights have been visible to some in the UK, but I haven't seen them yet. I am happy to just view your photos :-)

These are amazing Gudrun............and beautifully captured. The very nature of the aurora is that the odd unsharp bit doesn't detract from the photos at and I wouldn't have given it a thought if you hadn't mentioned it.

The aurora has been all over our news the past few days..........sighting have been reported from all over Scotland and the North and Northeast of England and some even from Cornwall and the Isle of Wight.

It's been too cloudy in my area!

Thanks very much, Keith! If they are moving fast you need shorter exposure times but in this case it's mainly the stars in the PiP that are not quite dots, because the ship moved during that 1second.
A pity you had overcast skies! From all the photos I have seen auroras look different further south, lower on the horizon and more red than green. No chance seeing them where I live, too far south and too much light pollution.

Danke vielmals, Markus! Tromsö im Februar ist da eine gute Adresse:-) Die Seilbahn auf den Storsteinen fährt bei gutem Wetter und entsprechender Nordlichtvorhersage bis spätabends.
Und in der Stadt hat's auch Veranstalter, die in Kleingruppe notfalls bis nach Finnland fahren, um das Loch in den Wolken zu finden....

Like Rosa said above, they have been visible in the UK these last few days, but despite no clouds over the weekend I haven't seen anything. Unfortunately there are no really dark skies in UK. Too many houses and too many streetlights.

Thank you so much, Peter! Green and high in the sky you can only see them in the North.
The sightings further south in the last few days were due to high solar activity but the colours do look different, less green and more red. Even if they'd have been visible in Southern Germany I would have had the same problem with light pollution you have....

I saw them once only in Skye in the late 70s. They were the multicoloured ones which I believe are rarer than the green so I feel privileged to have witnessed the show.. Never to be forgotten!

Thanks very much, Andy! From the photos I've seen of the recent ones I gather they were also multi coloured, with red dominating and all touching the horizon. I think it's to do with the earth's curvature and which molecules are being activated. South of the aurora oval you will only see northern lights when solar activity is very high (kp6 and higher), in the North you can see them even if the kp index is very low.
