Hoffellsjökull

Hoffellsjökull
One of the many outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull seen from Höfn, two more in the notes.
www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/areas/hornafjordur/interpretation-and-knowledge/about-hoffell
All are retreating at a rapid rate though Vatnajökull itself due to its enormous size of 8100 km² is expected to still be existence by the end of the century. It might be the only Icelandic glacier left by then if mankind doesn't manage to get a grip on itself - which sadly doesn't look likely after Cop27.-(

You show us such beautiful impressions of this area that you could be forgiven to think that there was no problem, but of course, we all know by now that there is. It's going to take a lot of tackling! In the meantime I will enjoy your beautiful series here.
Sunday greetings.

Thank you so much, Rosa! It's utterly beautiful seen from this place that sits on a spit in a lagoon. I wonder what will happen there with sea level rise,,, Maybe glacial rebound will even it out a bit.

These three images are absolutely awe-inspiring Gudrun. The light is particularly beautiful and you have exposed each shot perfectly - not always easy when snow, ice and bright light are involved. All three are superbly composed as well.

Thanks for including the link..........it's fascinating to learn how these outlets form and the effects on the surrounding landscape and ecosystem.

COP27 has been very disappointing overall..........but realistically I don't think you're ever going to get so many countries, with so many vested interests to agree on anything.............until it's too late :-((

At least they seem to have reached a decision on the question of loss and damage compensation for the poorest countries...........but I won't believe it until it actually happens!

Thanks a lot, Keith! The village where I took the photos from sits on a spit at the end of a lagoon with glaciers all over the northern horizon!
About the compensation scheme: we'll see what comes of it, so far it's only intentions and China obviously still hopes to get money out of it as they see themselves as a developing nation...

Hi Gudrun
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
Wonderful to see the glaciers..
As you say, have a global problem...
The 'Mer de Glace' by Chamonix used to be as high as the platform where the lady stands....

Gudrun club has replied to Leo W club
Besten Dank, Leo!

Such a stunning view, and hopefully this will last for a bit longer, Gudrun. The COP27 is trying to get a grip on things, but the humankind seems more interested in acquisition of power and money. I despair, but maybe the young can change things. I think of the fossil fuels that were used to get the meeting together, and the hot air that was produced during discussions, all contributing to global warming. Surely it could all have been done using Zoom or some such thing. No wonder Greta Thunberg 's comments on previous Cop meetings included 'blah blah blah.'
Gudrun club has replied to Amelia club
Thank you so much, Amelia! I hope so too but as long as old men that aren't able or willing to look beyond their own lifespan decide such things, the future is looking grim. I hope their children and grandchildren will join Greta Thunberg:-)

Stunning and so very beautiful. Love all the colour tones here. Ace photography and essential to view large I say, Gudrun :-)
It would be an absolute tragedy if this became the only Icelandic glacier left!
Gudrun club has replied to Roger Bennion club
Thanks very much, Roger! The views on all sides were just superlative, helped by the good weather.

I'm not sure whether even a complete stop to CO emissions right now could halt the melt soon enough. There are scientists who think the Greenland icecap might already have passed the tipping point.
