Fen Ditton - Musgrave Farmhouse, 10 High Street 20…

08 Dec 2014 117
From SW. C16 timber-framed cross-wing jettied to street, the surviving part of a larger building which extended to the west, with C17 brick east range at right angles; west front cased in gault brick in C19. Listing: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1331305 ; RCHM: www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/vol2/pp47-65 (item 16). The Grade II-star listing reflects the surviving internal features, illustrated at www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/vol2/plate-85 (upper picture) and www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/vol2/plate-86 (lower picture).

Described in the listing as a pair of early C19 cottages; plan.scambs.gov.uk/swiftlg/MediaTemp/1133136-509334.pdf suggests there were originally three, dating from c.1790-1810. There are some unusual and deliberately picturesque features, such as the glazing of the small window to the right of the door, although I suppose these may be quite recent. There was no hope of taking a photo in which the car did not appear, so I have made a feature of it.

From NE. Late C15 or early C16; restored and converted 1974. According to the RCHM, the high standard of carpentry suggests that the lower compartment only was used for storage and that the main rooms on the first floor were set aside for other use such as a guild hall or 'town house'; evidence survives for a first-floor entrance on the E. presumably by way of an external staircase and porch. There was formerly a lode alongside leading from the nearby River Cam, whose importance prior to the building of the railways is suggested by a complaint from nearby Fulbourn in 1806 that the lack of a bridge over a new drainage ditch deprived them of "a Road to Ditton for Coals and other Fuel [which] is an additional expense in the Carriage" [Don Crane, The highways and byways of Fulbourn (1991), p.105.] Listing: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1331306 ; RCHM: www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/vol2/pp47-65 (item 3).

Fen Ditton - 6 High Street 2014-12-08

From SW. Converted from, probably, three early C19 cottages; the upper floor appears to be built from courses of clunch blocks alternating with courses of gault brick.

Fen Ditton - 22 High Ditch Road 2014-12-19

19 Dec 2014 105
From NW. Early C17 with original bargeboards on the gable on the right; mostly early C19 and later windows. Listing: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1331304 ; RCHM: www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/vol2/pp47-65 (item 22). Now called the Manor House but listed as Manor Farmhouse and formerly as Fison's House.

Fen Ditton - Home Farm, 25 High Ditch Road 2014-12…

10 Dec 2014 181
From SE. C17 timber-framed house encased in gault brick in C19. Listing: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1331303 ; RCHM: www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/vol2/pp47-65 (item 23). The Grade II-star listing reflects the interior features, including C17 panelling (illustrated at www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/vol2/plate-90 [upper picture]) and re-set C16 roundels in an overmantel (illustrated at www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/cambs/vol2/plate-86 [upper pictures]).

Fulbourn - Six Bells 2014-07-15

15 Jul 2014 105
C16 inn, altered in C19 and substantially restored and extended c1963 following a fire. The upward step in the jetty indicates a carriage way through to the rear, blocked in the C19 when the ground-floor bay windows were also added. The brick gable end is part of the C20 reconstruction. The late C19 front seen here conceals a C15 hall house. List description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1127878 .

Fulbourn - St Osyth, 18 High Street 2014-11-17

17 Nov 2014 99
Essentially late Georgian in style, but perhaps mid-C19. The extension on the left is late-C20 and I imagine that the shutters are not original. Not listed.

Fulbourn - Chafy Row, Apthorpe Street 2014-11-12

12 Nov 2014 154
Early C19 cottages, formerly owned (and perhaps built for) Dr William Chafy, who was Master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, from 1813 to 1843, and a royal chaplain. Chafy owned the farm behind the cottages [according to Don Crane, Walks around Fulbourn (1986), p.5] and it looks as if he took the opportunity to develop the street frontage - according to a Cambridge contemporary, Chafy's "covetousness ... in many respects was almost inconceivable", although he was generous towards his College [ Sidney Sussex College: historical essays in commemoration of the quatercentenary (1996), pp.151, 157].

Probably C17 - the date 1661 formerly appeared on the porch, although such dates are not always to be trusted. List description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1127906 .

Audley End - Allegory of peace 2012-11-18

Jacobean carving above the more northerly of the two doors on the W front, caught by the setting sun. A corresponding, but damaged, allegory of war appears over the southerly door. For history of Audley End, see set page .
