W. front from SW. For history, see set page . This front is mostly Jacobean, although the recessed section above the central hall is part of an eighteenth-century link designed to improve the connection between the two sides of the house following the removal of the E. range. The twin porches were probably primarily designed to preserve symmetry while retaining the entrance to the central hall in its traditional position at one end, although it has been suggested that, since the house was designed to accommodate visits from the King and Queen (who maintained separate households at this time), they may have been intended to give separate access to a King's apartment and a Queen's apartment.

From NW. The north chapel was built for Sir John Gostwick (d. 1545), Master of the Horse to Cardinal Wolsey and later Treasurer of First Fruits and Tenths, who may have been responsible for rebuilding the whole church. List description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1312387 .

St Mary's Church. C14 tower, brick-built nave of 1737, chancel of 1871. The brick buttresses to the tower are presumably contemporary with the nave; there is an early Georgian West door.

From the W. C16 building on a medieval bridge, subjected to "a careful and thorough reconstruction" by William Watkins in 1902 ( britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-486019-high-bridge-207-20... ). More characterful, in my opinion, than the view from the E.

Former garage and car showroom, by D. Clarke Hall, Scorer and Bright; the engineer was Hajnal Konyi. Became the library headquarters and now partly restaurants, partly empty. Scorer evidently specialized in roof structures of this type, and has his own Flickr group . Dated 1956 in The Buildings of England but evidently approaching completion only in the summer of 1959: www.flickr.com/photos/allhails/3038267504/ . An article on its construction, with photographs, appeared in Concrete Quarterly , Spring 1960. List description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1392689 .
The multi-storey car park behind is a later design by Sam Scorer, dating from 1973-4 [thanks to alexbancroft for pointing this out - see comment below].
