The W. frontispiece of the E. range (1638-40) catches the last of the afternoon sun. The clock is an insertion, probably made in the C18. List description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1320280 ; RCHM: www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=128388 .

Looking E from the bridge, which dates from 1639-40 and was built (and presumably designed) by Thomas Grumbold: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1125549 . The W. front of the College has a complex building history; foundations were laid in 1640 but the right-hand section was begun in earnest in 1669; the left-hand section was carried on using the same design in 1705-15, when the frontispiece was also built using a more classical design than had originally been intended. The original cross-framed windows have been replaced by sashes and the sills of the ground and first-floor windows were lowered in 1815. Buildings of England: Cambridgeshire (2nd edn., 1970), pp.58-9; list description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1320280 ; RCHM: www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=128388 .

1907 view shows that the dormer windows are the result of recent restoration, as is the doorway on the far left, it seems: www.francisfrith.com/audley-end/photos/the-abbey-court-ya... .

From S. I have done a little perspective correction on this image and I think that I have got it right, although it is difficult to be sure as the building leans to the right! It is the south cross wing of a late C16 house, probably built in c.1583 for Thomas Sutton, Master of the Ordnance to Queen Elizabeth I.
