Logroño - Santa Maria la Redonda

Logroño - Santa Maria la Redonda
There are actually three cathedrals in Rioja. One of these is "Santa Maria la Redonda" in Logroño, seen here. The second cathedral is in Calahorra, the third one in Santo Domingo de la Calzada (see previous uploads). They all are "Co-cathedrals".

Logroño developed around a ford in Roman times. In the 10th century a bridge was built, so that from then on all "pelerins" could easily cross the river Ebro here. At that time a monastery existed here. The erection of "Santa Maria la Redonda" started in the early 16th century, but it took more than 300 years to complete it. The Baroque towers, flanking the facade, were added within the 18th century.
