Monasterio de San Millán de la Cogolla

Saint Emilian of Cogolla had lived on a mountain here as a hermit already in the
6th century. From this hermitage developed a monastery, that got destroyed by Almanzor´s troops in 1001.

The monastery on the mountain got rebuilt with the support of García Sánchez III
of Navarre and a second large complex in the valley, seen here, was added. The construction was completed in the 12th century - and was closed, when we arrived here in 2014. Siesta.
