Zaragoza - Basilica del Pilar

20 Dec 2014 282
The Basilica del Pilar is the largest Baroque church in Spain. It was erected 1681 - 1754, succeeding much older churches here. Since early times pilgrims come to "Nuestra Señora del Pilar" ("Our Lady of the Pillar"). A legend tells, that in 40 AD Saint Jaques (Saint James) was preaching the gospel on the banks of the Ebro without success. When he was disheartened, Mary appeared atop a pillar, assuring him, that the people would eventually be converted and their faith would be as strong as the pillar she was standing on. Mary gave him the pillar and a wooden image of herself. She then asked Saint Jaques to build a chapel on the spot.

Logroño - Santa Maria la Redonda

There are actually three cathedrals in Rioja. One of these is "Santa Maria la Redonda" in Logroño, seen here. The second cathedral is in Calahorra, the third one in Santo Domingo de la Calzada (see previous uploads). They all are "Co-cathedrals". Logroño developed around a ford in Roman times. In the 10th century a bridge was built, so that from then on all "pelerins" could easily cross the river Ebro here. At that time a monastery existed here. The erection of "Santa Maria la Redonda" started in the early 16th century, but it took more than 300 years to complete it. The Baroque towers, flanking the facade, were added within the 18th century.
