Hairy Woodpecker


We watched a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers at one of the homesteads we called in at on 5 January 2014, when a small group of three of us spent the day covering one quadrant of a huge circle around the town of Nanton. It was their annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count. When I was editing this image last night, I noticed what looks like the open beak (?) of the male inside the hole that was being excavated.
