Mouth of a Pitcher Plant

Mouth of a Pitcher Plant
Taken in the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo, on 20 April 2012. I thought the shiny mix of green and red stripes was beautiful. These curved edges become slippery when moistened by dew or nectar, causing an insect to fall into the pool of nectar juice, which contains chemicals similar to those in the human stomach. The insect is dissolved and becomes part of the juice.

This is a link to an amazing short video (4:15 mins) by David Attenborough, through the BBC, showing how Pitcher Plants are formed. Filmed in Borneo. I still remember seeing clusters of small Pitcher Plants growing along the edge of the road from Seria to Brunei Town decades ago.
