Best wishes to all for a HFF and a sunny, warm weekend somewhere close to water!
I found this photo in Essex Junction, Vermont - although it's obviously from somewhere else as Vermont has no coastline!

Written on the back:

Wm. H. Burr and Mary E. Burr

Some of the details I like are Mr. Burr's wet legs, and his pipe, Mary's turban, and the man in the top right hand corner leaning on the insubstantial looking sea fence.

You're probably right, Christa. I think women generally didn't start swimming until about twenty years after this photograph was taken.

You are right on your analyses of the photo... and beaches were not overcrowded all Summer like now, people looked better (more elegant) dressed too.

Gudrun, I have quite a few images of women in swimsuits pre-1920 - but they're nearly always paddling on the edge, very seldom in the water. Probably a good thing given the weight of those suits! HFF!

What a find! A fascinating and delightful photograph Deborah. The clothing and beach shoes caught my eye. The man leaning on the fence above looks to be 'suited and booted' and not at all dressed for the beach!

Thank you, Ecobird! I also love the contrast of the "boardwalk" wear and the beach wear. Doesn't that fence look scarily flimsy, though? HFF!

This is a strong sepia- toned photograph. Quite often I will process it a little by reducing the saturation so that the sepia tone is milder, but I left this one.
More "beach toned" maybe? : )
