There is no date apparent, but the inscription in pencil, inside the cover reads:

Nellie Jenkins
Sing SIng
1895

It seems that this was a British magazine which began publishing in the 1880s. I bought it as a 10 year old at a nearby Goodwill store. It's a hardcover book, with a colored plate on the cover.

Life is so strange sometimes. I work at a library, and today someone came in and held up the book, Sam and the Tiger by Jerry Pinckney, and asked "Is this really Little Black Sambo? I can't believe they would print that now."
Weird, huh?
The book has always been there and no-one has ever said that before, that I remember.
"Sam and the Tiger" is a retelling of Little Black Sambo by a fabulous African American illustrator/artist named Jerry Pinkney. He talks about the re-telling of it by explaining that it was a great tale he wanted to honor and to pull it away from its racist connections.
He sets it in India.
