Not sure if that's what it's called - but I had to go under a gate for this, and I got worried they might think I was scoping it out. : )
Of course, no-one was actually there.

I don't know enough about any of these carriers to say whether or not they're typical of America. Very possibly they're only typical of Vermont - or Addison County - or rural America. Others will have to inform you about that. : )
