Brian is exhibiting the behavior that, in our family, we call "testing the properties."
He's seeing if his head can be retracted after forcing it through the railing.
We used this phrase quite often with my four sons. You would be quite incredulous at the things that were tested and amazed that they survived with all limbs and brains intact.
