Na, die unechten Badenfreunde sind halt fake friends ;-)

Ich glaube nicht, dass hier ein badefreund gemeint ist, denn auf dem schild sind das wappen und die farben von Baden zu sehen. Obwohl ein echter Badenfreund natürlich auch ein echter badefreund sein kann ;-))

Wow, that's interesting news! Well, 40 years ago I still lived in Rastatt, so we most likely passed by each other somewhere in town ;-)) What barracks were you stationed at? Canrobert? Joffre? Merzeau? Some of the areas have been turned into residences and businesses since 2006 with some of the original buildings remaining.

Actually, I grew up with French kids (not only, but also) because ever since I was born and up to age 10 my family and I used to live in a big building near the Rastatt railway station. Right behind it was the "border" to the French quarter (with barracks, private residences, a kindergarten, etc.). So we climbed the fence back and forth, it was not allowed but that made it more fun. And although neither of us spoke the other's language, we had no communication problems :-))

Yep, pretty still, in one of the older areas, west of downtown and of the Murg river.

Amusing coincidence, indeed!
Actually, it's unlikely that we'd have crossed paths. Although I spent the only carefree months of my service there, during 'classes' we weren't allowed to leave the barracks. All I saw of Rastatt were the streets leading to it from the railway station (and by lorry) and the adjoining sports fields where we practised twice a day. Perhaps these fields gives you a clue to the name of the barracks? It could be near the current "Rastatt Turnverein" (?). "Canrobert" rings a bell but not directly... And I confess I don't feel like going there on a pilgrimage (even if the building has been preserved) ;-)
Knowing that such a 'border' existed makes me uncomfortable... (even if children was crossing it more easily than the Berlin Wall!). It must be pointed out that anti-German xenophobia was still rife in the French army at the time, including among officers and non-commissioned officers. That was enough to make me even more anti-militaristic!
