They are lying down because the adjacent tiered bleacher seats are low to the ground, and if they stood up, they would block the view of the spectators there. (Also, probably they were just hanging out together as friends.) ...

Bleachers are heap bench seats at sports arena, typically in an outdoor uncovered stand.
