Sun Sets on the Old Tracks Along the East Machias River


The Maine Central Railroad Calais Branch (running from Canadian Border at Calais Maine to Ellsworth [near Acadia National Park]). Abandoned in early 1980's; tracks torn out in Summer 2008 despite much public outcry. Converted to really nice rails-to-trails facility covering 88 miles (141km) from Ellsworth to Perry, but used mostly by local residents with 4-wheelers and snowmobiles.
(Note: in DownEast Maine, Calais is pronounced "cowl-us".)
