The sole purpose of this viaduct is to gain height. Trains coming up the gradient from Italy go through the arch just behind the bench, veer right, then make a full 360 degrees circle to the left, to emerge somewhat higher than before! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brusio_spiral_viaduct
