Lichens

Lichens
Today's photos are of what we sometimes call "small nature," little things we see along the way as we are walking and hiking and stop to photograph, in this case some lichens on the branch of a Ponderosa that my wife noticed. If I am not mistaken there are three different lichens here, including the little patch of orange at the top, but I've not tried to identify any of them.

Note: Janet has correctly identified the orange lichen, I believe, as Xanthoria parietina, the Common Orange Lichen and I believe the green lichen with the fruiting bodies to be the Brown-eyed Wolf Lichen, Letharia columbiana. The third, appearing as blue-green scaly patches I can't see well enough in the photos and will have to look for it again.

Oh, how beautiful! These branches are like "land coral reefs" and close inspection will reveal a trove of species to appreciate!

I believe this is what your orange lichen is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanthoria_parietina

Ack...want to write more but it's brunchtime and I've been tasked with gahering the chicken! Will be back!

It looks like you are correct, Janet, on the identity of the orange lichen.

Ron, I wanted to comment on your insets! The first inset totally rocks my world! The lovely curl of that leaf is so graceful and elegant, with beautiful little details and textures to appreciate. A truly outstanding picture! And your resin droplet, such a perfect tear. I love the frosted glass appearance of it and the wonderful tones of the cut branch. The needle bokeh in the background reminds me of nature's fireworks! Fantastic! Great shots, both of them! And back to your main image...I do love the coral reef on land that moss, lichen and fungus show us, and you really conveyed that beautifully! I was thinking about you today as I stared with my nose nearly touching the life-encrusted branch in front of me, and one of my insets today, which I captured a year back but was what I was looking at this morning, is a compliment to your lovely picture. :)
