Little Sable Point Lighthouse

Little Sable Point Lighthouse
I was out with my brother and a friend last Friday night photographing the sunset and doing some astral photography along the Lake Michigan shore at Little Sable Point. I am still not very good at astral photography but am learning. These are some of the photos I took there, all of the beautiful lighthouse, still working, at the point. We light-painted the lighthouse with a flashlight for these photos and I adjusted the exposure and contrast a bit. I'm dissatisfied with the graininess and lack of sharpness, but some of that has to do, I suppose, with the movement of the stars in a 30 second exposure.

Wilfried, Nora Caracci, ROL/Photo, Nouchetdu38 and 20 other people have particularly liked this photo

I did some with a master and the settings were 30 sec, f/2.8, ISO 1600 and my lens a 15mm. Something not to be forgotten is to put stabilization off when using the tripod. If you didn't this might be the reason of the lack of sharpness. As for the grain... the iso should be lower, if your lens allows it.
But the photo is nice and the feeling is important!

BREATHTAKING!!! I really love your pictures!! The light painting worked like a charm to give more illumination to the lighthouse. I think you did a wonderful job with these, though I do understand your frustration about the noise. Not sure about that part...might you have had your camera set to auto ISO? The blur, I believe, is as Xata said, image stabilization may have been on. Steve and I have done a tiny bit of astral photography and it's one of the only times I'm happy to use a tripod (a green light for waterfalls and water effects, light painting, night shots of most sorts and such.) Regarding blur, I got my share too, depending on the length of exposure. There are ways to fix this but I don't remember the details. Anyway, outstanding job, Ron!!

I'm glad you liked the coin pictures, even if the topic wasn't so interesting to you...kudos to me for keeping your attention! :D *self high-five* :D

Yay, you saw the turkey porn! :D LOL...I got many pictures...what a surprise. I really did think that the second I pointed my camera at them, they'd disappear. Steve taught me a very important lesson: just because you've missed a million pictures because your subject disappears when you're just about to take the picture, DON'T refrain from ALWAYS TRYING AGAIN. Had he not encouraged me, I wouldn't have had those pictures. I will never forget that lesson. It's very easy to tell yourself it can't be done and that's not right.

TY for the warning about Stanley Park. We'll heed your concerns. I'm really sorry to hear about the thefts you told me about, that just SUCKS.

Incredible that snow is still falling in Michigan...just crazy! It's been an odd year.

I hope your plans to visit Yellowstone and the Black Hills work out! Crossing my fingers that the weather cooperates for you. Your adage that there's always something to see is great. There are always more pictures to take and we will never process them all nor will we keep up with all the subjects to photograph. Just enjoy what you want and feel great about it!

Orchids really are like having children...well, any plant really, but some are fussier than others, again, just like kids! It's a reason I don't fill the house with plants. We have a few of course but not tons...I remember as a kid being paid by a neighbor to water her plants when she was away. It was like a jungle in her house but man...no thanks. As much as I love to have them, it's hard too...each is a green person and must be lovingly tended to. So maybe it is a very good thing for you to have a break. :)

Keep me posted on what you're up to! :D

A wonderful job considering the difficulty of astral photography. I have never seriously tried it before, mainly because I live in an area full of light pollution. I don't see a fraction of the stars you see. Good luck with perfecting your technique, Ron.
