Spreading Creek Wildfire

Spreading Creek Wildfire
I've posted other photos of this wildfire in Banff National Park in Alberta, but we are getting close to that season again and are wondering what it will bring for us and for the Northwest. We had two fires within a mile or two of our house and several others, more serious, in our area last summer. In fact, the last few years have seen fires all over the Pacific Northwest and it seems sometimes that the whole area is burning. Hotter, drier summers have brought this increase and it is likely to continue. I have to work on a firebreak around our property, removing some dead trees and a lot of brush this summer and these photos are certainly a reminder of the work I have to do.

The photos were taken as we were driving up through Banff to Jasper on a 2014 trip through the Canadian Rockies. We noticed smoke near Saskatchewan Crossing along Highway 11 and decided to investigate. At first we only saw some small fires in the distance and helicopters with buckets fighting the fire. As we were taking photos, however, the wind kicked up and suddenly the fire was near the road and we could feel its heat. We decided we had better get out and as we did several cars and motorcycles that had passed us returned and the people who were fighting the fire had come and were closing the road.

This fire, known as the Spreading Creek Wildfire, was started by a lightning strike and burned for over two weeks. It scorched nearly 9000 hectares of forest and was made worse by winds and dry weather. It was only one of many wildfires in British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Oregon and California that year. Indeed, there were times when the fires were so bad that the air quality deteriorated to the point that masks or staying indoors with windows shut were necessary. It seemed at times that sore throats from the poor air quality were a matter of course and only the autumn rains and cooler weather brought relief.

Dieu quel ravage et danger... mais que faut-il faire Ron, être vigilant ne suffit pas parfois, la prudence est requise, bon courage pour la saison à venir en espérant que tout aille pour le mieux !

I do hope your fire break works Ron, it seems that climate change is all around us.

Un désastre et un ravage toute cette perte (9000 hectares)..Des fois les élément de la nature se déchaînent telle la foudre et autres causent des pertes conséquentes.

Unfortunately in a minor yet dramatic way we know here what kind of toll it takes.
Two years ago more than 100 people in a poor country of less than 10 million people !
Either we think of it seriously or the "global warming" is not the first main danger.

Frightening images because it's so close to our hearts, isn't it? Great pictures but like you say, quite the reminder of possible things to come, once again. :( I hope not.

Thanks for all of your wonderful comments on my before-sunrise shots! :) It really was nice to be able to take them.

What a bummer that you didn't have the lens you like to use for astral photography. I do know exactly what you mean about hurrying and forgetting things. It's terrible and the cause of so many problems. Well, maybe next time you'll have everything you want with you and everything works out super! :) Your astral shots are incredible even if you're not so happy with them. :)

I have never lived on a lake before, how cool that you got that chance growing up. Steve and I both had the Pacific ocean--though for me it was a fair bike ride to get down there. Closer for Steve. I do miss the ocean but not as much as Steve does. He pines for it. Mountains? It's really nice here with mountains all over and streams and rivers. Really nice. But haven't been on a lake. I could see how the opportunities for cool photography would be enticing! I hope you get lots of super pictures from Lake Michigan!

Ohhhh, new birds! Wonderful!! Isn't it exciting when you find new ones! :) I will be posting a number of new species too...I just love that! *high five to us* :)

You got to see mute swans? LUCKY BOY! I have only seen a few swans myself and look forward to the opportunity of taking pictures of some when I have my camera with me. Can't wait to see your pictures!

Mmmmm, tapas! Haven't had those in a while. There really is nothing so good as authentic mexican esp home-style. SO GOOD!! And I agree...Steve and I love our cooking so much, why eat out? Plus, it's a pain to find food we can eat because of keto...in the end, our cooking is so much better, why pay through the nose for food that's not as good? Glad you got to have such a fine meal. :)

(There is a natural food store/salad bar near us that has incredibly fresh ingredients and we love to get big salads there...sooooo yummy!)

Nice to hear that you took your parents on a long drive. I'm sure they enjoyed it. Too bad about the flowers, though I bet they didn't really care--your company was the king of the day I bet!

Being sedentary...heh...yeah...I know that one too. For a while, it was so cold that I just didn't want to go out. But it's warming up and in fact, Steve got a new mtn bike for his birthday (his last is literally 30 yrs old) and we're going out every day, slowly working up to longer rides. In fact, I did a 45 minute ride earlier and my poor legs feel like they're going to fall off, lol. But it's a good tired. We're looking forward to going on lots of rides while we're on our RV trips!

Ok, that's about it from this end! I hope all is well with you! Have fun cooking up yummy food for your family--that will be lots of fun and everyone will love it! :)

Increasing droughts are apparently part and a result of climate change, through which nature is heating us pretty up and forcing us to change our behaviour. It's a pity it had to come to this. What do you think, Ron, can a firebreak protect your property from imminent forest fires in the long run, or will you possibly have to move at some point?

An impressive image, Ron, but nobody needs wildfires! We're moving into our winter after a hot dry summer and much of the country in drought - I hope you're not facing similar conditions and wish you all the best with your firebreaks and the warmer seasons.

This photo and the insets are so dramatic and threatening! And you were so dangerously close!
We have the same wildfire problems with our northern forest areas every dry season.
It's getting worse all over the world!
I hope your methods of wildfire prevention really help and wish you and your family safe always.
