Hedgehog Cactus

Hedgehog Cactus
These were in bloom in Joshua Tree National Park when we visited there last April. They are small cacti with huge blooms (see inset) and one of our favorite cacti. These were photographed on the trail to Fortynine Palms oasis.

Nora Caracci, Eve, Holger Hagen, Rainer Blankermann and 22 other people have particularly liked this photo

It's so nice to see cacti growing in the wild. Such a delightful little jewel of a plant.

These are all terrific, but I think my favorite is the close-up where the bloom isn't all the way open.

Ohhhhh, your photography is so wonderful, Ron. I am able to see how they look in their natural setting, and then all of the wonderful macros to appreciate them so fully. They remind me of rose mallow blossoms! The name...Hedgehog Cactus...leaves me giggling, isn't that CUTE! :) Thank you for the lovely presentation, marvelous as usual! :)

I wanted to respond to your agreement with Betty in regards to listening to an audio book while walking up and down my driveway...of course I agree with you! As Betty commented first, I left her a note, and later you mentioned agreement...so the note that I wrote to her can be left for you too--you're both right of course! :)

My note to Betty (and a nod to you!)...
Betty, thank you so much for your wonderful comment on my picture! I loved what you had to say, and those words are so true. When I begin my walk, I do not listen to my story...I listen to the world waking up around me. It is magic that must not be missed! It is only later, after I have enjoyed the delightful songs of so many birds and heard the sounds coming to me from Mother Nature, that I will allow myself to cover my ears. Now, when I am out on a hike--there is a place where I very rarely will ever listen to an audio book. In fact, to immerse myself into the environment, I play a game: "Point out 10 different sounds as you walk that are special to you." And, "Point out 10 picture-worthy sights as we go along." One cannot be part of a place without involving the senses. I breathe in the scents...I touch the bark, I stroke the leaves. You do the very same I am sure. It is why our photography can be so deep, because we are intimate with our surroundings. So YES. I agree that it is very important to be part of where you are in nature! And as for reading a book--I do that too, and cannot agree with you more. There is nothing like the smell of an old book! The experience of reading is entirely different than listening to a book. However, listening DOES give an opportunity to take in a book if one cannot do it otherwise! :) *hugs* Thank you for your thoughtful reflection!
