They're just an artifact. Traditionally, it was an easy way to build a fence if you had lots of rails but not much in the way of fasteners. You can just overlap the rails at right angles, and maybe lash them together if their weight wasn't enough.

Steve knows what he's talking about. In the "old-old days," there was more wood than nails or wire. They are sometimes used now for picturesque purposes, but are a lot more expensive than modern types.

I really like this one Diane..............brilliantly composed - with the zig-zag fence making a lovely leading line. Some nice colours in the trees and grass too.
