... saw your shot with the barbed wire ("bob-wire" in parts of Appalachia) first; intrigued by the farmhouse, so found this shot too ... this abandoned house is iconic in the plight of the small family farmer ... the weathered siding is a lovely hue ...

... but the roof looks new, and the hefty chain on the gate may be more than needed ...

Yes, the roof seems to have been put on shortly before the house was abandoned. Although no one lives in the house, the land itself isn't abandoned, which probably explains the chain. Also keeping vandals and "recyclers" out of the house, I imagine. Across the street (behind me as I took this shot) is a newer farmhouse, which could simply be another family member of this original occupant. It's not common for an entire farm to be left behind these days - at least not in this area - because all but the richest farm families have a member who has a job in town.
