Greater spotted wood snake

Greater spotted wood snake
Spotted in our old ‘Bardsley Canal’. It was rather slow moving but you really don’t want to meet with these things close-up.

Enjoy full screen

They certainly are. It really did look like a snake or crocodile at first sight. Glad you liked it.

It makes one think of the old Nessie, as refered by neira-Dan.
Just imagine the young one full blast in his outborad . . .

Yes, as Peter says below, a video of this snaking along would have made the TB news headlines. Maybe, it got here in somebodies rucksack after visiting Loch Ness?

Of course Peter -all submitted now. You can find it under 'Rare wood snakes' subheading part 7 -'Spotted varieties'. That is the next section after the 'lesser-spotted Martian bark'! :)

Hi Herb

A very nice picture, and a very clever idea!!!

You have set me thinking what I could set afloat in the river in our village...(Don't want to hurt the swans of course)...

Best Wishes,
Peter

Thanks Peter. This was a permanent inhabitant of this stretch no doubt but our friend Toz has found a couple of its cousins in Yorkshire:

www.ipernity.com/doc/2405228/50182148

I am sure if you look a little harder you will also find a cousin in your local habitat :)
