Spoleto extends over the Sant'Elia hill, at the foot of the sacred forest of Monteluco. Extraordinarily rich in art from every era and protagonist of prestigious events, such as the Festival of the Two Worlds. Spoleto is one of the symbol cities of international culture.
Important fortified centre of the Umbrians, it was a Roman colony and then town hall (90 B.C.). After the fall of the Roman Empire it was first garrisoned by Theodoric, king of the Visigoths, and then by the Byzantine Belisario. Taken over by Totila, it was rebuilt by the Byzantine Narsete.
In the early medieval period it was the capital of the Longobard Duchy. In 1155 it was conquered and destroyed by Frederick Barbarossa and, after a series of fights between Guelphs and Ghibellines, it was reconquered by Cardinal Albornoz who assured it to the Church and made it an important centre of the Papal State.
The government of the Papacy, except for the Napoleonic period, lasted until Spoleto joined the new Italian State.

Great candid street shot. I love the natural poses of the pedestrians and cyclists.
