Burning the pine forest

The forest in Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge is burnt every few years. The purpose is to aid the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker that needs a widely-spaced, open pine forest. The fire discourages most trees other than the loblolly pine in which the woodpeckers nest.

One bird has been sitting on the nest for a long time. The other arrived a half hour before this and is now taking over child care duties.

Two juvenile bald eagles had just been driven away from the nest. This one is guarding at least one chick.

These birds are on my pond almost every day. I haven't become tired of watching or photographing them yet.

I don't know what happened here, except that this farm machinery burnt. It must have been rather exciting for whomever was driving the machine.
