Burning the pine forest

Burning the pine forest
The forest in Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge is burnt every few years. The purpose is to aid the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker that needs a widely-spaced, open pine forest. The fire discourages most trees other than the loblolly pine in which the woodpeckers nest.

ColRam, Nora Caracci, Helena Ferreira, Annemarie and 13 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thank you all good friends. I read that this species has community child care. The aunts and uncles all bring food to the babies.
