Eastern bluebird attacking car mirror

Eastern bluebird attacking car mirror
I have the same problem at home with cardinals. I tie bags over the mirrors so the birds can't see their reflection.

There is another thought that suggests that all wing mirrors attract spiders. Could the birds be attracted to the spiders for a snack?

An interesting theory. Certainly there are almost always dead insects plastered to the front side of the mirror. On my own car, it sure looks like the bird is attacking an opponent rather than prey. On the car in this photo, there were three or four bluebirds "attacking" both mirrors. I wonder if the color of the car is important.

I have birds attacking the house glass here too. Cardinals especially. It is the rival complex rather than spider food though !

My house is amid the forest, and there was a big problem with birds trying to fly through the windows and dying in the process. I put some film on the windows so the birds know they can't fly through. I can still see out, but taking photos through the windows isn't so good.

Same here Ronals.

We are very rural and then surrounded by 10,000 acres of Wildlife Management Area. I have found the strikes happen at 2 separate times of year..and I think it is when the light is at a certain angle. I have hung some things against the windows inside and that seems to help a lot.

Thank you, sunlight. I think they probably saw themselves in the mirrors. There were four or five of these birds on this car.

WOW! I know that some birds will attack their own image on shiny surfaces. I have photographed a Goldfinch doing the same thing on the top of our black car a few years ago.

I have also seen them attacking their reflections in the windows of a house. This is the first time I've seen bluebirds doing it.

Haha - I guess I haven't seen any Western birds do this! Maybe I just miss it...

Try hanging a mirror on a tree and keep an eye (camera) on it. Let us know what happens.

... oh, better to have bluebirds attacking car mirrors than woodpeckers attacking the siding of my house -- hanging strings of shiny aluminum pie-plates from the edge of the roof seems to help some, but the neighbors give me "funny" looks ...

... (the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers were bad enough, but when a big ol' Pileated one started hanging around, I had to get out the hand-held compressed air boat-horn ...

I agree it would be very bad to have pileated woodpeckers attacking a wooden house. I'm glad my house is concrete. They may attack the trees all they want (which they do).
