I have the same problem at home with cardinals. I tie bags over the mirrors so the birds can't see their reflection.

... oh, better to have bluebirds attacking car mirrors than woodpeckers attacking the siding of my house -- hanging strings of shiny aluminum pie-plates from the edge of the roof seems to help some, but the neighbors give me "funny" looks ...

I agree it would be very bad to have pileated woodpeckers attacking a wooden house. I'm glad my house is concrete. They may attack the trees all they want (which they do).
