The Handmaid’s Tale. I watched all the first series on the flight back from Australia, it absorbed me completely. Now I’m watching the new series. I certainly intend to read the book. It is a truly remarkable piece of work. I was very moved to see women dressed in the red robes of the Handmaids at protests in the U.S. I did have a reservation about the series in it’s almost voyeuristic approach to Offred’s relentless suffering, but as a metaphor of the relentless exploitation of women everywhere I see it’s truth.

The red seems a perfect match, hidden behind the glass.

Well done, Steve. The TV series follows the book fairly well I have to say, although Mrs Waterford is much older in the book. However, the new series isn't part of Margaret Atwood's book. We're watching it anyway. We read the book in about 1959, and I found it incredibly moving as well as very disturbing.

I like the story of the origin of the name Offred:

“And she revealed how she came up with the name of the main character, Offred. The writer said she wrote a page of men’s names and put the letters O and F in front of each. “Ofkeith” just didn’t work, she said.”

I didn't know that, Steve. Handmaids were literally named for the men who possessed them: Offred for Commander Fred Waterford.
Handmaids’ names signified whose property they were. When Ofwarren disappeared the new handmaid was called Ofwarren.

Pretty much like the woman taking the man’s surname when married.

Neither having seen nor read The Handmaid's Tale I wouldn't have known about the allusion but I still can enjoy the photo on its own:-)
