Hellebores flowering at Christmas

27 Dec 2015 101
Hellebore Orientalis (also known as the Christmas or Lenten rose) are perennial shady garden plants with elegant, rose-like blossoms. They are among the earliest to bloom, often amid the last of the spring snow. In gardening Zone 7 , H. orientalis can bloom outdoors at Christmas Time. We are zoned 6 B/ 7 A around here, and with this latest round of warmth mine are bursting in bloom.... Merry Christmas!

Nov 8th is not Christmas

A number of us have Schlumbergera or Zygocactus as a house plant... and lovingly call it our "Christmas cactus"... but these plants have no understanding of our holiday seasons. Indeed, even putting a calendar with the correct dates prominently circled nearby for the plant to see will not help it... few of them have learned to read. Instead these plants do what our ancestors did - they track the hours of light and darkness. Based on this, they set their bloom cycle accordingly. So no - it's not Christmas on Nov 8th... don't believe the cactus... it's just time to bloom.
