Across the Yarra

04 Nov 2023 25 15 192
The Yarra River flows through Melbourne. It is often known, maybe a little unkindly, as the only river in Australia to flow upside-down, with the mud on top. :-) Looking from the south bank toward the city area.

Another Melbourne panorama

03 Nov 2023 38 31 220
Taken on the same walk as my previous panorama, this one shows more of the new buildings on the south bank of the Yarra River. On the right is the "Polly Woodside", now restored but a rusting hulk when I lived in Melbourne long ago. Also new is the long low building behind, part of the Melbourne Convention Centre. View large. Happy Fence Friday and have a good weekend, eveyone.

Melbourne panorama

02 Nov 2023 42 31 260
Just back from my travels, the main purpose being a visit to Melbourne. This is a stitched panorama from one of the bridges across the Yarra River. More distant to the left is the city centre, the buildings on the right are all new. View large. Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a good weekend to follow.

Perth

View of Perth from the hotel balcony, on an overcast early morning. Happy Bench Monday and have a good week, everyone.

Across Perth

Looking across Perth from Kings Park. With another Friday here, I'll use this to wish everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a good weekend.

Reflecting on Perth

07 Sep 2022 33 24 339
One thing that struck me in Perth was that quite a few of the old buildings have survived the rush to build glass towers, unlike some other Australian cities. For my money, the city is the better for it. For interest, in this shot, the sunlight on the older building is being reflected from the building nearer me.

"Endeavour" in Sydney

05 Jul 2022 41 21 367
The Australian National Maritime Museum has a replica of HMS Endeavour , the ship used by Captain Cook in 1770 to map the eastern coast of Australia. In the foreground one of Sydney's catamaran ferries. See also PiP.

From the Flyer

02 Apr 2019 31 25 553
At 165M, the Singapore Flyer is the second highest giant Ferris wheel in the world. A ride on it was unmissable, as was the view of the city (see also notes) .

Across the river

06 Dec 2017 23 18 783
I tossed up whether I prefer this daytime shot of Shanghai or the night shot (previous image): finally I decided to run both. The height of the buildings is slightly deceptive - on the right is the Shanghai Tower, the world's second tallest building at 632M (2073 ft). The building just left of it (unkindly known as "the bottle opener") is the "Shanghai World Financial Centre" and is 492M high. Best viewed large. Explored.

Moon over Chengdu

One to view large on black. The full moon rising over the city of Chengdu (from the roof of our hotel). A wide daylight panorama from the same viewpoint in the note. Explored.

Big fence or small?

07 Sep 2017 22 14 574
A section of the old Beijing city wall. HFF, everyone.

Beijing arches

06 Sep 2017 15 12 551
The view from our Beijing hotel room. Coming from a small regional town, it was a little daunting to be in a city with a population greater than the whole of Australia! But there were surprises, such as the number of trees and parks and the familiar "arches" (also several other worldwide chains).

Near the city

19 Mar 2017 28 18 754
There can't be too many cities with cliffs nearby that are suitable for rock climbing and abseiling! After a day at work, it now seems a popular way for many to relax in Brisbane (see also the note). View large. On the subject of rocks, a parting link to one the greatest rockers. Explored. Help save ipernity - www.ipernity.com/group/2260604/discuss/186760

Evening city lights

15 Mar 2017 29 16 719
Merged evening panorama of Brisbane. Not much of a sunset, but the lights made up for it. It's some years since I visited the city and I can't get over how much the buildings have grown - the bridge and City Hall (now lost among the giants) were once the tallest. Best viewed large. Canberra - Australia's Capital City

30 Nov 2016 17 10 642
View from the lookout on Mt Ainslie across Canberra, Australia's beautiful capital city. In the middle distance is the Australian War Memorial, with Anzac Parade leading from it toward Lake Burley Griffin and, further, toward the old and new Parliament House buildings. The main city centre is to the right. Best viewed on black.

Remembrance - also of a city.

28 Oct 2015 17 16 608
At the edge of what was the Christchurch city centre pre-earthquakes: now largely empty of usable buildings, but with massively solid new constructions going up. Explored.

Rebuilding

28 Oct 2015 8 12 558
Christchurch is rebuilding after two severe earthquakes within months (Sept 2010 and Feb 2011) killed many and left the city in ruins. Almost the entire city area has been cleared, as few buildings remained safely usable: these empty buildings await demolition. Massively solid-framed buildings are being erected. Second image in note.
