Leigh Park Gardens......the Lake

Strangely enough the ruins (which date from the early 1800s) are what is left of a small gun battery set up for nine guns. Why anyone would need that in an ornamental lake is a mystery..!!

A bit of a disappointment to be honest. My wife and I always try to get out and about together, but we're unable to get too far off road nowadays which is why we decided on this location. The car park is close by to where we're standing. We arrived to find the the ruins were completely fenced off. In addition the Walled Garden and Tea Rooms had been closed down. However, I still managed to get a few photos and it was good to get out in the fresh air. We ended up going out for lunch nearby and still had a decent day out and at least the rain held off :-)) A bit of history: Cowdray House consists of the ruins of one of England's great Tudor houses, architecturally comparable to many of the great palaces and country houses of that time. It is situated in the Parish of Easebourne, just east of Midhurst, West Sussex standing on the north bank of the River Rother. It was largely destroyed by fire on 24 September 1793, but the ruins have nevertheless been Grade I listed.

Store House

This little store house (probably for grain) is to be found in the grounds of Cowdray House Ruins, on the Cowdray Estate, Midhurst, West Sussex. The little mushroom-like legs it's standing on are called Staddle Stones and were designed to help guard against water seepage and vermin.
