"The second Marian Year was summoned by Pope John Paul II on January 1, 1987 in the homily of the Mass for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, with the purpose of preparing for the arrival of the new millennium and to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the Christianisation of Lithuania. The second Marian year was opened on June 6, 1987, on the eve of the feast of Pentecost and was closed on August 15, 1988 on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin."

Processions of penitents carry magnificent "Pasos" or floats with sculptures that depict different scenes from the Chrisitian writings related to the Passion of Christ or the Sorrows of Virgin Mary. Usually, the "pasos" are accompanied by Marching bands performing "Marchas procesionales" a specific type of composition devoted to the images.
